It’s only been a year since Nintendo launched their DSi handheld on the market but already they have gone one better. March 5 sees the European launch of the Nintendo DSi XL. So what’s new?
Well this time around, there isn’t really that much new but they have taken what the old console had and given it one big improvement, they’ve made it big. The screen size has increased a massive 93% over the size of the previous console.
With dual 4.2″ screens, no one is going to be squinting or straining their eyes to play their favourite Mario or Brain Training games. Even if you were happy before with the small screens, seeing your games at almost double size adds a new dimension to the experience.
While the extra large screens of the Nintendo DSi XL are its main selling point, there are plenty of other brand new features to make you consider upgrading from last year’s model. After using the new pen stylus, you won’t want to go back. The new version of the stylus is much thicker and for the first time provides an ergonomic design which won’t cramp your hand even after extended play sessions.
As well as larger, the new screens make wider viewing angles possible. This means the screens remains clear no matter what angle you are viewing from. The main benefit of this is that other people can watch you play. That’s good news if you like taking turns at games and seeing how well your friends and family play.
The Nintendo DSi XL comes with its exclusive pre-built-in software. The software is an arts edition of DS classic, Brain Training and a Camera Dictionary which provides you with information about whatever you take a photo of!
The increased size also allows for more battery power so the new console can last up to 14 hours which is 3 hours longer than the standard DSi.
So far I’ve only talked about the new features exclusive to the Nintendo DSi XL, if you don’t own a DSi already, there are a whole host of extra features which will be new to you.
Most obvious are the two built-in cameras, one on the front and one on the back. Fun software is included which lets you put lots of amusing filters on your images while you line up your shot; you could give yourself 2 heads or a balloon face for example.
As well as playing with images, you can also add fun filters to sound recordings you make. Change the pitch, speed and even temperature of your recording (w

One of the best features is that you can now easily browse the web with a built-in web browser.
The system gives its users access to the DSiShop where you can download new games or free demos at any time when you have access to the Internet.

One drawback is that the console is not compatible with Gameboy Advance carts, so if you’re a fan of older games, you might be happier with a DS Lite. A further drawback is that the systems is of course large and doesn’t slip into a pocket as easily although it will still fit into the pockets of most jeans.
If you think 93% larger screens, a pen stylus, built-in software and all the features of a DSi are enough to justify upgrading to a Nintendo DSi XL you will only have to wait till 5 March 2010 to get your brand new console.

The two big names who set the standard for Anime story telling and quality animation are director Hayao Miyazaki of the Studio Ghibli.  Their fantasy anime move, “Howl’s Moving Castle” got theatrical distribution North America. Influencial anime director Katushiro Otomo made a big return to the big screen with “Steam boy,” since his great Anime classic, “Akira.” These two films were nominated for the 78th Academy Awards. The sequel of one of the most famous anime movies ever “Ghost in the Shell: Innocence” has been released on the DVD. “Appleseed” was a fllm adaptation of the movie “Ghost in the Shell” but it was only given limited theatrical release.  All of these  films met with success in the United States. Anime films that had a good run in Japan are “Full Metal Alchemist” and the highly anticipated “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children film.”

Disney and Anime’s Impact in Entertainment

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is (at the date of this publication) the only animated movie that has been nominated for the Oscar Awards Best Picture category. An Anime film called, “Spirited Away,” won the Oscar award for Best Animated Feature Film.

She leaves the old life of a hatter and starts living with a wizard Howl outside which the war has been settled. So the fight starts threatening her new home. Hence she with the Howl must find the way not only to lift the curses, but to bring the peace between the two countries.

 

Howl’s Moving Castle has a strong heroine, amazing supporting characters and wonderful visuals. Howl’s Moving Castle will definitely gain greater popularity  and a bigger following when it is released on the DVD. It will give the the people who missed to see it a chance to see it.

 

Steam Boy

 

Steam boy is like a typical summer blockbuster movie that is jam-packed with the action. The latest in a line of inventors is the Ray Steam who lives in England which is the main power source of steam. His grandfather has returned from the expedition in America where he with Ray’s father invented a new kind of ‘steam ball,’ which is a small device which contains the highly pressurized steam. Steam boy is not as dark as the apocalyptic movie Akira. In fact it is like an exciting children’s movie that has almost continual explosions with the debates on nature of science.

What are the primary differences between Japanese Manga (Comics) and American Comics?

There is a big difference in art styles between Manga, which is more stylized (exaggerated) and American comics, which tend to be more “realistic”. There are also quite a few serious differences between the two types of comics. Some of the differences, just to mention a few of them are the cost, creation, diverse audience and genres, presentation and even size.

The creation of Manga as well as its presentation is quite different than American Comics. Manga is printed in black-and-white format while American comics are the majority of the time in full color. Also, when you look at a graphic novel or Manga you will notice a difference in the size. Manga is frequently smaller than traditional American comic books, usually digest-size and roughly half to one-third the size of American comics. But where the American comics are generally thin like a small magazine, running about 32 pages, Manga comic books are thick and can be hundreds of pages in length!

In page count, Manga is quite similar to graphic novels, which are often just collections of the ongoing American comics. But unlike American graphic novels, which are usually just a collection of monthly comics in a single unified story or story arc, Manga books are often apart of an even bigger story and a complete Manga storyline can run thousands of pages.

Another difference between traditional American comics is that mainstream American comics are often created in a sort of assembly-line fashion. They have a writer (story), a penciler (initial sketch), inker (uses a pen to ink over the sketch), letterer (adds dialog) and a colorist (colors the inked sketch). Most Manga books are done by a single creator, who combines all those chores (except coloring).

Also Manga story lines usually move at a much quicker pace. Due to the high page count, one reads a Manga book at an accelerated pace. Manga books almost always have fewer panels and less dialogue (rambling) per page than American comic books. The price for Manga is also more than the average comic book and a bit more than a standard paperback novel, the small size of Manga and black-and-white printing rather than full color keeps the cost down. The lack color is made up when you consider the story development that it’ll have with the amount of pages it has.

In Japan, Manga is not viewed as just for kids unlike the American stereotype. There pretty much is a Manga for everyone. With that being stated there are three main genres in Japanese Manga: Shonen Manga (boy’s comics), Shojo Manga (girl’s comics) and Hentai (adult comics).

Shonen Manga is pretty much comics that are primarily action and/or adventure geared. If you’d like to view some examples of that genre, I’d recommend “Bleach” and/or “Full Metal Alchemist”. Shojo Manga is for the opposite sex; they are often about relationships and/or love interests. Please note that even though a particular genre is geared towards a certain audience it’s not limited to just that audience (unless otherwise stated). Finally Hentai Manga, I won’t delve much into this since it is primarily for adults and NOT suitable for children (just to be safe in case a child is reading this). Anyways, Hentai Manga is sometimes sexually explicit and/or adult-themed. In other words, do not purchase this for your child.

Next time someone asks you what the difference is between Manga and [American] comics, you can surprise them with your knowledge.

Do you love to dress up during Halloween when you were a kid? Well, I sure did and I always made sure that my costumes would be a hit whether I was dressed up as a pirate, a spaceman, a knight in shining armor, or a vampire. When I was young, I always claim that I made my costumes myself, but that was only partly true. My mother always assisted me with the sewing, the design, the glue and sequins. If I did get something quite right, my friends were so impressed with me for sewing it.

However, it can be more difficult to find the right adult Halloween costume. Bio Hazards

We have this fancy new employee directory web site at work. It’s meant to help us find each other, by showing our office locations, phone extensions, and a photo.

It is not, I’ve been told, meant to help us find pics and phone numbers of hot chicks on the floor above us, so we can call and giggle at them like an idiot. I’ve been told this several times, in fact. The last time in writing, even. Whatever.

Anyway, we’ve also been encouraged to fill out a ‘biography’ section for the web site. No bunch of nameless and faceless cogs are we — they want us to learn about each other, to share our interests and goals and aspirations.

I’ve tried this ‘sharing’ thing. And it’s not working out. I just can’t find a bio that screams ‘Charlie!’ Not in a supportive, unhorrified tone of voice, anyway. My attempts have not gone well.

First, I tried the ‘Employee of the Month’ angle:

‘I’ve been working here for a little over two years. My hobbies include filing papers, working late, fetching coffee for the boss, and just being the bestest darned member of ‘Team Success’ I know how to be. Gosh!’

No good. I proofread that, and gave myself a wedgie. I needed something more subtle. So I tried the ‘Interview-Speak’ approach:

‘My tenure of employment in the current establishement has afforded me the opportunity to enhance my skill set, tackle technical challenges, and develop a strong interdisciplinary view of our overarching mission as an organization.’

Nice. What does it mean? I have no fricking clue, and I spent twenty minutes writing it. I think maybe it describes the time I figured out the automatic towel dispenser in the bathroom. I’m not sure. Bet I could land a CIO position with doubletalk bullshit like that some day, though.

I decided to go back to basics, with the ‘Honesty Is the Best Policy’ strategy:

‘When I’m not working, I enjoy many hobbies. You might find me playing volleyball, cheering on the Red Sox, or passed out face-down in a pool of tequila and lemonade outside my local liquor store. Also, I like boobies. And I wouldn’t drink from the coffee pot on the fourth floor, if I were you. Trust me on this one.’

Honesty was never my strong suit. So I tried the other extreme and went the ‘I’m Better Than You’ route:

‘I came to this company from Harvard Universi

ty, where I earned several of my many Masters degrees. In addition to being a black belt in karate, jiu jitsu, tae kwon do, and several martial arts you roundeyes have never even heard of, I’m also a world champion yodeler, chess grand master, and Nobel Prize laureate. In my spare time, I model mens’ underwear and maintain a topiary crafted as busts of famous Danish physicists.’

Nice effort, to be sure. But someone’s bound to eventually ask me to break a cinder block in half or trim their hedge to look like Neils Bohr, and the jig would be up. So that wouldn’t do, either.

I started to think I’d never have a suitable bio, when an idea finally struck. What’s the point of this bit of personal info, anyway? It’s to encourage people to leave me the hell alone, so I can get some damned work done. Peachy. I know how to do that:

‘I live in a small studio apartment near the office, with my nine cats and life-sized cardboard Xena ‘action figure’ for company. I enjoy collecting stamps, writing Babylon 5 fanfic, and sorting recyclables into the proper bins. Stop by my cube any time to discuss the inconsistensies in the Skywalker clan backstory, the advantages of artifact-heavy Magic decks, or to trade Dungeon Master wardrobe tips. ‘Live long and prosper’!

Brilliant. And only marginally autobiographical. Hey, recycling is important, dammit!

I’m also happy to report I haven’t had a single person drop by my cubicle to talk to me since I posted that bio. Even the cleaning staff won’t come near it.

And if anyone ever does — looking for Klingon ringtones or DragonBall bumper stickers, no doubt — I can always bonk them on the head and ditch them in a conference room. Who’s gonna miss somebody like that, eh? It’s probably just the CIO, anyway.
