There, I said it.

His name is Edward Cullen and he’s the lead character in the book Twilight, the first in a series of four books (five if you count the most recent partial transcript posted online) written by Stephanie Meyer.

The story goes something like this – Bella Swan, a Plain Jane high school student whose parents are divorced, moves to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. At Forks High School, she meets Edward Cullen, a beyond gorgeous fellow high schooler with pale skin, extraordinary physical capabilities and a slew of weird behaviors nobody can explain.

Readers of Twilight soon learn:

1. Edward is a human-friendly vampire who “feeds” only on animals.

2. He’s never been more attracted to anyone’s smell than Bella’s.

3. He can read everyone’s mind but hers.

4. He desperately wants to be with Bella but is utterly afraid he’ll hurt her, both physically and emotionally.

5. He must protect Bella from non-human-friendly vampires, one who is particularly evil and will stop at nothing to kill her.

I’m embarrassed to admit I’m obsessed with the Twilight series. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I’m a 38-year-old married mother of three and that Stephanie’s books were written for the under-18 set, of which I am not officially a part. Or that I’ve been able to get nothing done around the house with my nose jammed in a Twilight series book for the past month. Or that I’m planning a night out with a host of girlfriends to see the Twilight movie premier on November 21st, while wearing a t-shirt that says “Bite Me”.

What in God’s name has gotten into me? Apparently, the same thing that’s gotten into the rest of the worldwide female population I suppose…young and (ahem) old alike.

I hear the millions of visitors to Entertainment Tonight Online, upon seeing the Twilight movie teaser broadcast, subsequently crashed the popular entertainment show’s website due to an influx of online traffic in the hours following the broadcast.

Everywhere you look and listen – on TV, on the radio, in print and on the Internet, it’s all about Twilight. Up until a few days ago, the movie’s promo people were busy running full-blown, full-page Twilight ads on the home page of MySpace.

In just three short weeks since posting Twilight Layouts to SpaceGravy.com, a social networking design website, they’ve become the most popularly-downloaded designs the company has offered in its three-year history.

Many of my friends, who are also in the over-30-married-with-children crowd, have read every book, are heading to the movie premier on the 21st and have fantasized on more than one occasion about falling “unconditionally and irrevocably in love” with Edward.

So what gives?

Is Twilight so popular because it’s all about angst-ridden forbidden love? God knows how enticing angst-ridden forbidden love can be.

Are women just generally obsessed with a dark and profoundly romantic love story?

Is Edward’s appeal so appealing we can’t get seem to get enough?

Do we secretly wish to be damsels in distress, waiting for our knight in shining hemoglobin to swoop in and rescue us?

Have we used our fantasies about Bella and Edward (Edward in particular) to escape our otherwise uneventful lives?

Does Edward’s love for nondescript, run-of-the-mill Bella make other nondescript, run-of-the-mill ladies believe there’s a remote chance someone like Edward could fall in love with them too?

Or is the seemingly unattainable love between Bella and Edward so magnetic, we can’t seem to tear our page-turning selves away from what happens next?

Who knows?

All I know is that I love Edward the Vampire. And in my warped little desperate housewife mind, he loves me too.

Vampires stalk our collective imaginations. The stars of books, movies, and even role playing games, they are at once both dangerous and alluring. No Halloween celebration would be complete without wax teeth, fake blood and a black cape.

But were there ever any real Vampires? Probably not, although there are any number of historical figures whose bloodthirstiness may have provided a basis for the legend.

Countess Elizabeth Bathory certainly stands as a prime example.

Born in Hungary in 1560, Bathory was married at age 15 to a warlord who apparently spent much of his time away fighting the Turks. Left at home, Bathory satisfied her own bloodlust by torturing and killing young girls.

Her victims at first were peasants, but as her sadistic urges grew, Bathory expanded her prey to include the daughters of minor gentry.

It was this that proved to be her undoing. Missing peasant girls is one thing, but the gentry were wealthy and educated. Local priests brought their suspicions to Emperor Matthias II, and an investigation was launched.

George Thurzo, the Palatine of Hungary, led the inquest, and on December 29, 1610, caught Bathory in the act. The Countess and four suspected accomplices were arrested.

Over the next three years, more than 300 people were interviewed and a chilling story emerged. Always a harsh mistress, Bathory apparently came to truly enjoy the pain she inflicted on her servants. Her cruelty was regrettable, but certainly not unheard of.

One day, a servant pulled Bathory’s hair while brushing it. The Countess raked the girl’s cheeks with her long nails, spilling blood on her wrinkled hand. Bathory imagined that the drops of blood smoothed away her wrinkes, and concluded that the blood of young girls could restore the beauty of her youth.

That’s when the horror really began. Bathory began to kill young girls to bathe in, and drink their blood. Evidence at the trial put the body count at more than 600.

Following the trial, Bathory’s accomplices were burned alive. Because she was nobility, Bathory escaped execution, and was instead walled up in a room in her own castle, where she died three years later.

But horrible as it is, Bathory’s story is usually overshadowed by that of another Eastern European noble.

Vlad III was a Romanian nobleman who lived from 1431 to 1476. Held hostage by the Turks as a child, Vlad later came to rule his father’s kingdom, which has variously been identified as Transylvania and Wallachia. He was also known as the Son of the Dragon (Dracula) in reference to his father’s position as a Knight of the Order of the Dragon.

Because his kingdom served as a buffer zone between Moslem Turkey and Christian Europe, Vlad’s life was one of constant warfare. Leading frequent raids into Turkish territory, he burned crops, pillaged, and poisoned wells. Legend has it that one of these excursions resulted in the deaths of 20,000 Turks.

Both home and abroad, Vlad gained a reputation for cruelty and ruthlessness. His father was murdered in a political intrigue, and Vlad apparently was determined not to suffer the same fate.

In one story, he is said to have invited his political enemies to a meeting at his castle. Vlad then locked the doors and burned it to the ground.

Another story tells of the visit of an Ottoman ambassador. When the ambassador refused to remove his turban as a sign of respect, Vlad had it nailed to the poor man’s head. That surely did not do anything to improve relations between his Kingdom and the Turks.

But the cruelty for which Vlad is best known also gave him his nickname: Tepes, which means “impaler.”

To serve as a warning to his enemies, Vlad would impale his prisoners on long poles, leaving them to twitch and rot in the sun. It is said that the roads to his kingdom were lined with these poor unfortunates.

So much of Vlad’s history is mixed with legend that it is imposible to know how many of these stories are true. But contemporary reports seem to verify many of them.

Accounts vary as to the circumstances of Vlad’s death. Tradition holds that he died in battle with the Turks and that his head was sent as a gift to the Sultan of Turkey. Another version claims that he was killed by the Hungarians. It’s also possible that he was killed accidentally by his own troops.

Strange as it may seem, Vlad Tepes is seen as a folk hero to many in that part of the world.

Vlad may have been lost to history, except for the research of a writer named Bram Stoker. Planning a novel on vampires, Stoker rediscovered Vlad and made him the central figure in the novel that bears his name: Dracula.

In more modern times, several serial killers have been dubbed “vampires” by the press.

Fritz Haarmann committed at least 24 murders in Germany between 1919 and 1924. He killed his victims by biting their necks. During his trial, which became a media circus, Haarmann was variously called a werewolf and a vampire. He was beheaded in 1925.

Haarman wasn’t the only “vampire” in Germany at that time. Peter Kurten, a serial killer who was beheaded in 1932, was known as the “Vampire of Dusseldorf.” He was charged with nine murders and a variety of other offenses, including sexual assaults.

It is said that Fritz Lang’s movie “M” was based on the Haarmann and Kurten stories.

In England, John George Haigh, the infamous “Acid Bath Murderer,” also was known as the “Vampire of London.” Haigh, who was hanged in 1949, claimed to have drunk the blood of his victims before destroying their bodies in a vat of sulfuric acid.

Are there real vampires?

Again, probably not. But there are those whose monstrous crimes make us wonder about the terrible creatures of night and legend.

“Why so serious?” the Joker asks bemused as he pushes a knife in to a criminal’s mouth before performing horrific surgery on his face. This scene sends chills down your spine; an unexpected feeling given the more amusing history of this character on screen. From his first appearance in director Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, it is evident that this Joker is different to all previous on-screen versions of the character. Unfolding on screen is a malevolent, psychotic, mass-murdering anarchist; like ominous screen villains such as Hannibal Lecter before him, he is completely mesmerizing to watch.

What makes this version of the Joker so formidable and engrossing is the dramatic depth afforded to his character combined with the strong thematic structure set up within the film. The Joker is Batman’s exact opposite, and equal; he’s there to cause chaos and throw Batman impossible ethical choices, and at times, he does have his measure over the Caped Crusader. More importantly, director Christopher Nolan sets up the premise that the Joker is a by-product of Batman himself. As Alfred remarks to Bruce Wayne at a crucial point in the film, “You spat in the face of the criminal underworld; did you think there wouldn’t be a response? Things were always going to get worse before they got better.”

Christopher Nolan made a great choice in choosing not to give the Joker an origin story. Nolan referred to the Joker as like the shark in Jaws; he shows up to chew through everything and scare the hell out of everyone. However, he does have something of a back story, recounted by the Joker himself in two crucial scenes where he recounts his father’s psychotic behavior and his explanation from where his facial scars came from. Both scenes are downright chilling, especially when you realize that as the Joker is describing what happened to him in the past that he is about to inflict that same fate on the person he is telling his tragic story to. On the page this would have been frightening to read, but Heath Ledger delivers a performance that takes these scenes to another level. He manages to convey menace, tragedy, lunacy and even a touch of comedy all at the same time. As he is describing his personal tragedy, you almost feel sorry for him; but then the malevolence returns, and you wonder if he is actually telling the truth or using this story as an excuse to exacerbate the mental anguish his targeted victim is going through. All of these factors make for an extraordinary Joker, all the more highlighted by his encounters with Batman, another extreme character who will stop at nothing to stomp out crime in Gotham City. In a crucial interrogation scene, the Joker quips, “kill you? Why would I do that? You complete me!”

The late Heath Ledger has thrown down the gauntlet to any actor aspiring to play this character in the future because it seems hard to see how any one will be able to top this performance in any future Batman films. When the decision to cast him as the Joker was announced, many eyebrows were raised: how could this seeming nobody actor from Australia take on a character that Jack Nicholson played so well in the first Batman film? Flash forward to release and there are no more doubts. One could say that even Jack Nicholson’s performance as the Joker in Tim Burton’s 1989 film “Batman” pales in comparison to the depth, range and villainy of Ledger’s definitive take on Batman’s classic arch enemy. Ledger completely disappears in to the role, lighting up the screen with every malevolent twist in the plot, reminding us how powerful film can be when it’s driven by great story and character.

I should point out that Ledger is part of an ensemble cast that works wonders in this film. Ledger is in the spotlight because of his untimely passing but the other cast members, particularly Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart are likewise excellent in their respective roles as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

In this day and age of soulless Hollywood product designed to sell movie tickets and toys by the billions, the fact that a film such as “The Dark Knight” has emerged from this backdrop is very encouraging. Hope now exists that at least on some occasions, Hollywood will be driven to make quality films as opposed to shoddy merchandise masquerading as a film; anyone remember “Batman and Robin”?. The only down side to this film is that it is the one and only time we will get to see Heath Ledger portray the Joker, a performance so formidable that it begs the question: what actor out there is brave enough to play this character now?

Anime And Its Music

Music is essential to every anime and goes since its first seconds. Almost always after an anime release (series, OVA or movies) its soundtrack goes on sale. For very popular productions especially of several seasons, disks will be released for fans. No wonder as a whole, since apart from its basic objective anime OSTs also have a financial function – series are mostly financed by producers of such accessories as audio and video disks, toys. So series soundtrack sales support further series.

Disks contain compositions, songs and sometimes some character dialogs. Of course, most such disk songs are opening also predefining the series’ commercial success. Opening and ending themes are performed by specially invited musicians or vocal actors seyu recording soundtracks. Sometimes producers can cast a beginning actor for a series part only to let him/her perform a song there and become famous so. Ending themes are less prestigious than introductory ones but still granted to few.

Many top bands agree to record anime songs. In 1999 The Pillows recorded 2 popular tracks for FLCL – Ride On Shooting Star and I Think I Can. In 2001 it was released in the US boosting its popularity in North America.

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross series known in America as Robotech in fact gave rise to the seyu industry in the early 1980s due to featuring Iijima Mari, a young actress and singer in the key female role of Lynn Minmay. These series songs performed by her were top-rated in Japanese hit parades and for the first time in anime history aroused great viewer interest to this profession.

Unlike feature movies with popular songs sometimes used to create a mood or contemporary atmosphere, animes usually have specially composed songs (mainly opening and ending themes). As an exception, The Story of Young Hanada (2002) series featured Backstreet Boys band songs as opening and ending themes.

The Bubblegum Crisis (2002) cyber punk series directed by Akiyama Katsuhito became the 1st with a soundtrack so popular the key actresses organized a band, Knight Sabers to perform a number of very successful concerts. Then this became common practice though such bands exist only during series production and release. Another popular band is DoCo with actresses who recorded a soundtrack for Ranma 1/2 TV series.

osting fan base. Many post polls to choose the best soundtrack. Thus BeStuff.com’s poll attracted about 2K visitors who chose 5 best anime soundtracks of 2008. They included:
1. Death Note (Film, TV)
2. Naruto (Film, TV)
3. Fullmetal Alchemist (TV)
4. Cowboy Bebop (TV)
5. Howl’s Moving Castle (Film)

As seen, greatest popularity is enjoyed by music from series rather than full-length movies. Notably, Cowboy Bebop’s soundtrack has long been considered one of the best. It consists of a large collection of jazz compositions mixed with folk, rock and pop music. The series itself is named after Be Bop, a music style.

A top seyu and J-pop performer is Megumi Hayashibara. She has voiced tens of characters and numerous songs within the DoCo and Ties bands. Her popular roles include:
* Ayanami Rei (Evangelion)
* Lina Inverse (Slayers)
* Hello Kitty
* Ranma-chan (Ranma 1/2)
* Catgirl Nuku Nuku
* Lime (Saber Marionette J)
* Tira Misu (Bakeretsu Hunters)
* Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
* Haruka (Love Hina).

Though most tracks on such disks are performed in Japanese (except adapted versions for the English market), there’re some animes with prevailing English compositions. An example is City Hunter’s soundtrack with mostly English themes by Japanese bands and singers.

As mentioned, most anime OSTs are performed by seyus. However, Japanese music showbiz and seyu industry seem to have started merging. So some seyus set up their own music careers and beginning pop performers try to play a part in a popular anime series to sing a song there thus promoting their 1st album.

Moreover, pop music and animation are financed by the same corporations with the top ones being Sony and Pioneer.

What Are Ways To Read Comic Books?

Once upon a time, youngsters hopped into bed, pulled out their flashlights and settled in to read comic books, soaking up their favorite superhero’s adventures. Today, iPhones, laptops and DVDs have become the new mediums for graphic novels.

Comic books DC and Marvel have created are being converted into digital formats slowly but surely. While the paper sale of graphic novels in the North American market is still a healthy $705 million (quintupling since 2001), there is still the desire to modernize and change with the times, just as the characters in the comic books have. Some call it “evolution,” while others just call it “business.” Either way, given the enduring success of the hero narrative, comic book series aren’t likely to go anywhere anytime soon.

Many fans just want to read comics for free. After all, that’s what the internet and peer-to-peer is all about, right? There are a few databases offering graphic novels for free. Manga comics, like Naruto, Bleach, Love Junkies, Pokemon and Vampire Knight can be found at Mangafox and Mangavolume, for instance. More than three hundred conventional classics from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Vertigo, Wild Storm and Oni can be found at Lorencollins.

Fans looking for “Golden Age” comics can find comic book series like “Tales of Horror,” “Out of the Shadows,” “Jumbo Comics,” “Exciting Comics” and “The Perfect Crime” (with characters like Ibis the Invincible and Blue Beetle) at Comicweb. Other comics from that time period, like “Baffling Mysteries,” “Strange Fantasy,” “Underworld,” “Famous Funnies,” “Forbidden Worlds” or “Whiz Comics” can be viewed at Goldenagecomics. Additionally, for fans of DC comic book characters, the first five issues of each major series are being offered as free PDF downloads at Ugo.

Of course, not everyone feels like sitting inside to read comic books in their rooms all day long. Now fans can take their favorite comics graphic novels outside, on the bus, into the lunchroom or on break at work with Nintendo DS portable players, iPods and iPhones. “Comic Book DS” is a neat application that can be downloaded at 4colorrebellion, so that comics can be read on Nintendo DS systems.

For the iPhone or iPod Touch, fans will need the “Com

icZeal” program, which can be purchased for $1.99 at Igoapps. To read comics on a laptop, a program like Adobe Acrobat Reader will likely be required.

So where does this take the future of comics? Marvel Comics Publisher Dan Buckley says they want people to read comic books using new formats, but they’re still undertaking research to see where their time and efforts are best spent. “We’re still quibbling about what the primary form of revenue will be,” Buckley said, relaying that some comics can be found online for free.

“We don’t want to do anything to hurt anybody in the short term,” he added, meaning the independent comic book store. In general, the comic book industry agrees that the internet can be a great way for comics to gain a larger audience.

What Is Going On With The Edward Cullen And Twilight Phenomenon?

Chances are you have either read the Twilight series, you have the Twilight series memorized or you surely know someone close to you who has.

Many of you haven’t read the series because you’re usually in front of a craze like this and are ashamed to admit you didn’t read the series when Stephenie Meyer first wrote it in 2005 or maybe you haven’t read the Twilight series because it is kind of like being unique, like not having a tattoo or not being on Facebook.

The Twilight series is one of the bar none’s best literary series since C.S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia, and is up there tied with Harry Potter, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

How can that be said about Twilight and how in the world can it be compared to literary greats such as Narnia? Meyer’s Twilight series of four books; Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn has somehow managed to break down age barriers as well as the gender wall.

Girls, women and even men between the ages of ten and 100 are reading and becoming obsessed with Meyer’s romantic fantasy world that I like to call “Dawson’s Creek with Vampires”.

At the center of the fantasy world is Edward Cullen, the romantic, chivalric and handsome immortal man who is always saving the day. Yes, I agree Robert Pattinson played the part well and yes he had my 34 year-old knees shaking and I occasionally think about him while sleeping however the fictionalized character in the series is what has women across the globe swooning and comparing their significant others to Edward Cullen.

It’s reminiscent of the New Kids on the Block craze back in the early 1990s. It’s also reminiscent of the current Jonas Brother’s craze. Women everywhere are dreaming about this romantic and sexy vampire who manages to save his true love Bella, numerous times.

Edward was technically born in 1901. He technically ‘died’ at age 17 in 1918 however this is just when he became immortal. Therefore, he lived through the entire twentieth century soaking in the music, culture, literature and chivalry like a sponge.

He is a pure gentleman as he opens doors, gently kisses and caresses Bella, and they don’t even have sexual relations until read

ers are well into the Twilight series. When they do finally make love, Edward is as gentle and as caring as any woman would dream their partner to be. He is always concerned for Bella, he listens to Debussy and he can quote Shakespeare. Does it get more romantic than this?

Edward has famous quotations in the series which are quite possibly the most romantic things ever said to a woman in this century. Edward tells Bella “You are my heart now.” My favorite line from the movie is “You are like my own personal brand of heroin.” He also tells Bella from his heart that he has been looking for her for a long time. He says “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb….” This is his romantic and gentlemanly way of professing his love for her.

I was not happy with Edward’s character when he left her broken-heart in the woods in the beginning of the second book, New Moon. In fact, I cried and I don’t think I have sobbed that hard since my last break-up.

Edward leaves Bella because he just loves her that much he would rather suffer in heartbreak the rest of his life than further endanger her life. Don’t worry; they reunite and Twilight fans just accept the fact that you won’t like New Moon nearly as well as the other three books in the series.

The break-up is where the “Team Edward” versus “Team Jacob” controversy comes from. In her extremely unbearable heartbreak which nearly kills her, Bella turns to best friend – and werewolf – Jacob.

It is my opinion that the “Team Jacob” people cannot see that Edward left her out of love and he wanted his soul mate to be safe. I understand the “Team Jacob” people were so indebted to Jacob for ‘saving her life’ as she seriously nearly died of a broken heart.

Regardless of if you are Team Jacob or Team Edward you will learn to accept the fact that while Edward and Bella are truly soul mates, apparently so are their daughter, Renesmee and Jacob.

There are three specific parts in the first book, Twilight, that stick out in any woman’s mind as being the moments she fell in love with and then even more in love with, Edward Cullen.

Women are so prone to falling in love with the ‘Knight in Shining Armor’ and that is exactly what Edward Cullen’s character delivers. We women fantasize about being rescued from these situations and Edward makes it a reality. Well, a fictional reality.

Edward saves Bella from being completely crushed by a mini-van in the beginning of the series. He uses his speed to get from one end of the parking lot to the other, where Bella is and uses his immense strength to stop the mini-van from crushing her into her own vehicle. She is completely unharmed and does not have a scratch on her.

Meyer’s describes the adrenaline and the sexual chemistry that is going between the two during this scene and it takes everything we have to not start naming our first child Edward.

In another scene, Bella Swan is walking in a dark and unlit area in an unknown town. Some drunken guys are harassing her and the situation actually gets quite tense. There is a feeling that Bella is in real danger and could be assaulted or even raped. Suddenly out of nowhere Edward comes flying out of the darkness to save the day.

Bella is safely in his car within seconds and Edward gives the guys a visual warning that the reader can only pretend to comprehend the fear going through their veins.

Finally, the ballet-studio scene is the most romantic in such a sick way. Edward saves Bella from James, the bad vampire who is tracking her to kill her. Edward saves her once by getting James away from her and aiding in the killing of James, and saves Bella again when he goes against absolutely every instinct he has and sucks the venom from her blood without killing her.

To women and men everywhere, from ages ten to 100, Edward Cullen is the Romeo of the twenty-first century, without a doubt.

Sir John de Wolfe is back in Crowner Royal by Bernard Knight and is once again faced by trials, endless intrigue, and unexplained murders. The year is 1196 and even though Richard the Lionheart is back in the kingdom, more mysteries lurk behind closed doors. Knight once again produces magic and brings the twelfth century back to life.

John, along with Gwyn and Thomas de Payne, are sent to London to investigate matters there. What John finds doesn’t surprise him but it does make him pause long enough to recognize that something must really be afoot. Things are different, John realizes when he is thrown in the center of intrigues of the closed world of Royal Court. Bernard Knight makes all these all too real; so much so that when a character does something he shouldn’t have done, you have the urge to dive into the book, right into the story, and knock some sense out of them. Knight’s extensive knowledge in medieval history is a very big plus factor that adds to the story’s magic.

One of the things that makes Crowner Royal a must read is the characters. John de Wolfe is a delight to read; though he may look a little too stern, he is incorruptible and loyal to Richard the Lionheart. It is his eye for women that makes him as human as humanly possible. The supporting characters do not disappoint as well; Gwyn and Thomas de Payne help John in every way the can. It is impossible not to fall in love with the characters and not to be affected with every disappointment they face. Knight is a wonderful storyteller and he makes twelfth century England alive with his words. Crowner Royal by Bernard Knight will surely be a hit when it comes out this June.
