San Lorenzo A Great Place For Italians And None Italians In Warsaw

There are places where one is always welcome not because one maybe rich or famous but simply because one showed up and took a liking to the what one found as well as the people. The kind of place I have in mind is the one where guests mingle with one another in an atmosphere that is created not by anybody in particular but by the little things for instance the way in which guests say “ciao” (hi or bye in Italian) to one another whenever coming or going or the way everybody knows ones name. It is these details and many more which make the bar-restaurant “San Lorenzo” located in downtown Warsaw on “John Paul 2nd street” be precisely that sort of place.

I am talking about a place where Italians as well as their descendents like myself or even people who have no traces of being Italian what so ever are never denied the affability and joy that is in the Italian way of entertaining. This holding true in San Lorenzo because of it’s main owner, Gianfranco who is equally charming when talking to the President of Poland (who can on occasions be found there nibbling away at his Lasagna) as when talking to the most modest of guest.

As for my relationship with “San Lorenzo” this dates back to late in the summer of 2001 when I accompanied by my wife and daughter ventured to take a table outside deciding to give this place a go. My wife and I were not hungry so we limited ourselves to ordering espresso for me and a cup of tea for her while our daughter (Paullina, The Star of “The Little Opera Singer”) needing to satisfy her youthful sweet tooth ordered Tiramisu with her favorite drink, apple juice to wash it down.

I as a person who had traveled to over 30 countries had encountered many a restaurant claiming to be Italian with not as muc
1000
h as the slightest connection to the “old country” apart from the name of the establishment or the fact that they served pseudo Italian dishes. I for my part can not claim to have immediately noticed from the outside or even the inside which I saw when I went to the men’s room that this was a restaurant whose proprietor was Italian. It was not that the interior of this restaurant was in bad taste as that was not the case but I also had seen places which though well decorated were not Italian. I had even been to this particular place before which I knew to have two stories as I had visited it on many an occasion when it was being used as both a clothing store which was the upstairs part and a cafeteria on the lower level.

The interior decorating I had to admit was nice even more then it had been but I was still curious to see if the owner was Italian so after having looked the place over both upstairs and down, I went outside again to join my wife and daughter who had already been served.

The tiramisu my daughter ordered tasted like the real thing (her allowing me a small taste) but I needed proof in regards to the authenticity of this place.

The verification came when Paullina stood up as she was 3 and a half years of age at the time and kneeled on the floor to play with a toy car she had brought with her and just as she was in the middle of playing a dark haired man approached the table and said “Hey Pokemon” due to my daughter’s t-shirt of the popular cartoon character. This man whose name I would eventually find out was Enrico Buscema, part owner, his partner in the business being Gianfranco Lucese, a Florentine man living in Poland married to a Polish lady whose mother is Stefania Kozowska, a well known Polish singer of some years back.

There wasn’t anything special I noticed about Enrico till he sat down joining the group of people who were sitting at his table who were speaking Italian. I don’t know what it is but there is something about hearing people speak my language in a foreign country that unites me to them. Perhaps it is knowing that that person is also a foreigner from the same place I am from or curiosity to simply share impressions of another country but be what it might I always seek to became acquainted with people whom I hear speaking Italian outside of Italy.

This being a large group made me shy about approaching making me bid my time till the party that had been at the table nearby was reduced to a party of one. A well attired redheaded gentleman who was rather on the portly side had been left alone leaving me with my chance to speak.

“Excuse me, are you Italian?” me of coarse addressing him in Italian which seemed to catch him slightly of guard as he in Italian replied “yes, I am and you?”. I at this point having his full attention told him that I was American but my father was Italian, like the actor Sylvester Stallone. I also introduced by wife and child to this man whose name escapes my memory as it has been over 5 years since I last saw him. We must have conversed for about 5 minutes when Enrico came back to the table and upon hearing that I spoke Italian introduced himself to me and the rest of my family.

This was my first visit to San Lorenzo which like most firsts we never forget specially when they are not lasts as this place saw me come back the following week on August 9. This date being of significance because it was the one on which 4 years prior my then fiancée and I took our vows in the church in the act of holly matrimony. Our daughter was past the age of 3 and capable of proper conduct prompting my wife and I to let her join us on that occasion for a relatively late dinner. A dinner which delighted all of us specially Paullina (the restaurant having a special chair for her) by including some of the finest dishes in what is known as Italian cuisine with the wine that again could not be other then Italian.

One of the things that impressed me about that particular visit was tha
1000
t several of the guests whom I had not yet introduced myself to who saw me sitting at my table or walking around the place with my daughter seemed to know who I was. They knew my name, that I was a writer born in New York but could speak Italian because of my father and many other things all of which I had told the gentleman with the red hair in the short conversation I had had
with him.

Another thing that caught the eye of my wife as well as my own (my daughter being too young at the time) was the photographs on the walls of all the famous people who had already been there. Then the place being open less then a year only included photographs of local celebrities such as Kasia Figura (Polish actress) but eventually this collection of photographs grew to include such noticeable patrons as Jose Carreras, Steven Segal, Roman Polanski, Alexander Kwasniewski (then President of Poland), Lech Kaczynski (current President of Poland) and his brother JarosBaw (current Prime Minister of Poland) and many others to numerous to mention.

The evening was a true enchantment for the 3 of us for many reasons but above all it had been the Italian cuisine. The dishes which we tasted not only on that evening but on many others to follow were the real flavor of Italy and it is with intensions of not influencing anybody who should go to San Lorenzo after reading this that I refrain from mentioning any by name.

The year was 2001 which like one can expect was followed by 2002. That being a world cup year which saw the greatest enthusiasm for the “Squadra Azurra” as its fans mostly Italians but not only gathered at “San Lorenzo” to show their support for what would be the fiasco of being eliminated by South Korea before even getting to the quarterfinals. It was a bitter pill for us the “Fratelli d’Italia” (this meaning brothers of Italy while also being the Italian National anthem) to have to swallow seeing our “nazionale di calcio” play 4 games which only yielded us one win combined with 2 losses and one draw.

However it was in defeat that we see the real character of the individual particularly the one who can keep his dignity as that is how we did it taking comfort in having previously won the world cup on 3 different occasions and with the hope that there would be brighter days for our “azurri”.

Another consolation for us was how some of the local television stations came over to our beloved San Lorenzo to see how the many nationalities living in Warsaw were following the world cup. Me being fortunate enough to be among those who were interviewed on TV.

Like the saying goes “it is always darkest before dawn” this meaning that Italy’s time would come as it did last year in the “2006 World Cup” held in Germany. This was the world cup in which Italy claimed its 4th F.I.F.A. world championship after 7 games the last two being the most grueling of all.

The last two games being the most arduous as they were the semifinal and the final. It was the first of these games which pitted Italy against Germany, the home team as well as 3 time champion and 7 time finalist. The second of these games pitted Italy against France who had won it all in 98 as well as being the team that had eliminated us from the 86 and 98 world cups and had defeated us in the 2000 final of the European Championship.

It was the way in which San Lorenzo was packed to capacity by all the people whom I had been seeing on a weekly basis for the last 5 years that gave me the courage to believe that such opponents could be overcome. These people after all had been with me through the tragedy that had been the previous world cup at least as far as Italy was concerned.

The semifinal against Germany was difficult to watch as we suffered at the agony of seeing two of our shots hit the woodwork in overtime but out of it all came the moment that allowed us to yell out the word “goal” in a huge action of relief as Italy was finally able to break the deadlock through Gro
1000
sso who scored in the last minute of O.T.. however the game was not over nor was the scoring which would continue less then a minute later when Del Piero found the back of the German net for what would be our second goal guarantying us a place in the final.

If the semifinal was a spectacular show then the final could not be any less as the brave Italian tifossi at San Lorenzo some of which were Polish, Egyptian, Russian etc braced themselves for what would be a game against “Le Blue” of La France which would be winner take all. The place was naturally packed to capacity one more time on the Sunday of the final with tensions running as high as the expectations of being world champion for the fourth time. If truth be known I do not think I would have preferred to be any where else but at San Lorenzo with the sole exception of the site of the final itself in Berlin. This was where I would celebrate or cry with my fellow Italians like I had done 4 years ago but win or loose the friendships would not fade.

The final kicked off with us sitting in many tables drinking our beers and eating our pasta, pizza and other Italian dishes and just as we were getting in to the flow of the game a mistake by the referee gave France a penalty. A penalty which lead to France drawing first blood when Zidane barely converted giving France the early 1 to 0 advantage.
We the Italian tiffosi were down but far from out as it took a little over 5 minutes for San Lorenzo’s supporters to once again shout goal when Matterazzi’s header leveled matters at one a piece. As anybody who has ever seen his country in a final can confirm there is nothing like seeing ones country score and for us it was elation extraordinaire as we had not come this far to give up after trailing by only one goal.

The rest of the game including overtime went by with the score leveled at one a piece necessitating penalties which had never at least in a world cup seen Italy come out on top but this I felt deep down was our day as all the people whom I had known for so long were not going to be denied.

8 penalty kickers took their turn with only Trezeguet missing for France and it all came down to Grosso (scorer of Italy’s first goal against Germany) to deliver us to the promised land that was our 4 title leaving us with only one less title then Brazil. The moment of truth had arrived one kick, one goal to end all and earn all, would he do it? Our hearts were in our mouths as we saw Grosso step up to take the penalty which he converted sending me along with everybody else in to a wild frenzy that lead to fireworks on the street as well as an all night party.

Italy winning the world cup was wonderful and it no doubt would have been such no matter where or with whom I had seen it (as had been in 82 when we beat Germany in the final 3 to 1) but for some reason I felt that being at San Lorenzo made it just that wee bit better particularly because all those familiar faces were there to share it with me.

Ideas For Kids Themed Birthday Parties

Kids love to have a birthday party with a theme and all the decorations of their chosen character. There are many popular themes and the following list may give you a few ideas for your child’s next party.

Girls Parties

1. Dora the Explorer – This is a very popular theme for little girls. A great theme for a birthday party would be a Spanish birthday party complete with piñata. The children could have fun with a sombrero party which is played similar to musical chairs. Placing the hats on a table in a circle the children go around the table until the music (Spanish) goes off and then grab a hat.

2. Barbie – Every little girl loves Barbie. The theme of this party could be a makeover party. The birthday girl will have loads of fun as will her friends when they get to dress up like Barbie with real make-up too. All the little girls can have makeovers. Provide tiaras for them to wear as well. Of course, there are many Barbie games that can be played such as a treasure hunt for Barbie

3. Hannah Montana – The latest in the craze of girl’s role models is Hannah Montana. This would be an excellent birthday party theme for girls around the age of 8 to 10. A karaoke machine with music from Miley Cyrus is going to be a must. A make-shift stage will make a big hit and you can give prizes to the singers. Complete this with a cake in the shape of a giant CD.

4. Tinkerbelle – When it comes to fantasy, Tinkerbelle is probably number one. When planning this party make sure to purchase wings and wands for the party girls. The birthday girl can come dressed as Tinkerbelle. A tent in the back yard fixed up like a fairy castle would be a great addition to the party. This would also allow the girls room to spr
1000
inkle fairy dust as they play. Games adapted to the fairy theme such as tag are very popular for these parties.

5. High School Musical – This type of theme for a birthday party would be for your older children such as pre-teens. You will not have to provide games as you would for younger children. The music of course should be from the movie and your decorations will want to go along with this theme. Food will be your main thing. Provide all the snacks they like such as chips and dips and finger foods. Kids this age love to snack.

Boys Parties

1. Spongebob – This can be a fun time for your little boy. With bubbles, Spongebob stickers and all the sea creatures that live in Bikini Bottom, one great way to celebrate a birthday would be to have a pool party. Play hot potato in the water with the theme song from the show using sponges for the ’potato’. Serving crabby patties from the grill and other snacks will make this birthday special.

2. Super Mario Brothers – A great party idea for young children, the main food can be pizza and chocolate coin candy can be used for party favors. The theme music from the game can be played and a contest to see who can find the most mushrooms (you can make this yourself) will be part of the fun. A Yoshi piñata is another great idea for this birthday theme.

3. Pokemon – This can be a party that your child will remember. Either a game of Pokemon trivia can be played with Pokemon cards for the prizes or a Pokemon treasure hunt can be another idea. Kids love to be up moving around and this would be a great idea for keeping them busy. Of course you need the theme items for decorations and the cake.

4. Wall-E – A scavenger hunt allowing the kids to find their way back to Earth with every item they find on their list is a great Wall-E party idea. The game of Simon says with robot voices would be another. Find enough junk for the kids to work on their own robot. This can be loads of fun for the Wall-E party.

5. Kung Fu Panda – If you know someone who is knowledgeable in the art of Kung Fu, see if they are available to come to the party and show the kids a few moves. If not, you may be able to hire someone for an hour for a nominal fee. Be inventive and think of games that could incorporate the use of chopsticks. Have a sword fight with something non-dangerous such balloons.

What episode of Inuyasha is it when Kagome is on top of Inuyasha and tugging at his shirt?

Episode 5.
I remember because it's the episode where Sesshomaru first appears.

Springtime in Washington DC

Springtime in Washington DC is a beautiful time of year. One of the most beautiful sights are the cherry trees in full bloom. Spring is the time of year that people from all over the world come to the city to view these spectacular trees. Spring in Washington DC means it is time for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The Cherry Blossom Festival is being held March 28th through April 12th in 2009.

The Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC has several beguiling and breathtaking events, but none so electrifying and fun-filled as the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival! This festival has everything, live performances, Japanese food and products, martial arts exhibitions, Japanese cultural exhibits, sake tasting and two (not just one!) Kirin Ichiban Beer Gardens. (Note: Since I go with my children, I have never actually gone to the sake tasting or beer gardens…however, everyone in those areas seem to be having a very good time!)

I realize that many people will tell you the most galvanizing part of the Cherry Blossom Festival is the stupendous fireworks show over the water. Several will say it is the sensational parade that precedes the street festival. Dozens will tell you it is the cherry blossoms…just the cherry blossoms that make this so enthralling. I am here to tell you the truth. The Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival is the place to be to have a stimulating and thrilling day!

The Parade

Don’t let my comments above fool you! The National Cherry Blossom Parade is a colorful event. The giant balloons, marching bands, floats and performers are sure to entice everyone in your group, large and small. The parade route runs along Constitution Ave from 7th St to 17th St NW. This year’s parade will be held on April 4th, 2009 beginning at 10am.

Alex Trabek, Jeopardy! host will attend as the Grand Marshall. Other big names include Miss America 2009, Katie Stam, Joey Page (watch for swooning teenage girls!), Kimberly Locke from American Idol and Grammy award winning Thelma Houston. Celebrities from all over aspire to be part of this parade!

Marching bands will come from as far away as Nevada. Floats will include the ever popular Cherry Blossom Princesses. Performers from America and Japan will entertain and astound you! There will be singing, dancing and martial arts! A giant Kermit the Frog will hoover overhead sauntering along with Hello Kitty.

The parade is free and open to the public. Just line up on Constitution Ave and watch the wonders parade past you. If you dislike standing for long periods of time, or just want to ensure a good spot, think about purchasing a seat on the grandstand. The grandstand is located between 15th St and 17th St and will guarantee you a stupendous view of the parade. Grandstand ticket stubs will also allow you free entry to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum a short walk away.

The Main Event

Immediately following the parade is the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival. This is scheduled to run from 11am to 6pm on April 4, 2009. There is so much to see and do in this festival you will wish it was for a week instead of a few hours! The festival is interactive allowing adults and children to try out many of the crafts, learn many of the dances and sing and play with the performers.

The festival is 6 blocks of Japanese packed fun! It runs along Pennsylvania Avenue from 10th Street to 14th Street and down 12th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue. My family likes to take the Metro to Metro Center and walk the 2 blocks through the cherry blossoms to get to the festival. Many people will exit the Metro at the Federal Triangle which brings you right to the center of the festivities.

The Food

We go from Metro Center to 12th Street and Constitution Avenue to begin our journey into the world of Japan. The first booth is usually set up by Southwest Airlines, who sponsors the parade. Here we stop to get our names written in Japanese characters (for free of course). Our first souvenior in hand we continue.

Down 12th Street heading towards Pennsylvania are most of the food vendors. We usually stop at some point in the day for Yakitori and rice. My daughter discovered she loves sweet red bean buns. It is fun to go and sit on the steps to one of Washington’s famous buildings, eat and watch the crowd go by!

The Performers

This year you can see Ai Kawashima perform. She was part of the Japanese Pop band i-Wish, but is currently pursuing a solo career. Ai is one of the top Pop artists in Japan. Her father died when she was a small child and her mother died before she became famous, but this lovely lady does not focus on the bad in life. She focuses on love and world peace using her singing to inspire others.

Her songs are featured in many anime and video games. Two of the most famous are Compass, the theme song for the eighth One Piece Movie and Crawl, the theme song for Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon. She has an enchanting voice and a serene stage presence.

Traditional Japanese Performances

Five stages are set up during the street festival. All in all, 35 hours of entertainment is performed. Now you know why I need a week to do and see everything! You have martial arts performances on Freedom Plaza. Traditional Japanese music performances, such as taiko and koto to name a couple. The taiko drum performances are thrilling, a mixture of drumming and martial arts.

There are numerous dance performances going on. Geisha’s with fans dancing to traditional Japanese music. Japanese princesses dancing with cherry blossoms. Happy dances, somber dances…interactive dances? Yes, you can learn how to dance traditional Japanese dances at this festival. Dance, Dance Revolution is another great favorite! You can watch as ordinary people master these moves…or try some yourself!

Anime in Real Life

My kids favorite part is when we head over to J-Pop land. This is where you see anime history. Anime is Japanese animation (cartoons) often based on manga (Japanese comic books). You may have heard of some, Dragon Ball Z, Inuyashu or Pokemon are some of the more mainstream anime.

The Sakura Matsuri street festival draws anime lovers from all over. You will be on line with characters such as Ash from Pokemon, Kagome from Inuyasha and Goku from Dragon Ball Z. People have pink or green or blue hair. Kimonos abound! Dressing up is for the young and the young at heart. There is no age limit imposed.

Watching the people is my favorite part of this diverse and dramatic festival. I love when 2 groups of anime dressed people come together and start to act in character. Comee Comee Haaa is often heard. I had the pleasure of watching two Ashes Pokemon battle. There is nothing like having a little fantasy come to life to liven up the afternoon!

Buy Something Japanese

Don’t forget to go to the Ginza Marketplace, where everything Japanese is on sale! Want one of those weird masks to wear on the back of your head? You will find it here. Want a hat with ears? Want some Pocky? Here is the place! There are swords, posters, manga, anime, jewelry, anything and everything…definitely something for everyone.

Fun For the Whole Family

Young or old, boy or girl, everyone will find something they love about this festival. People are friendly and in good spirits. There is a spirit of unity and celebration. People are here having fun and enjoying life. They come out rain or shine to celebrate the Japanese way. The only complaint you will ever hear is, “There’s not enough time to do everything!!!!!”

Toys From Summer Blockbusters 2008

Star Wars was the big bang as far as film merchandising and children’s toys where concerned. The demand for the toys was so high that the manufacturers could not keep up with demand. For Christmas 1977, they sold boxed vouchers for various toys. The toys sold in the “Empty Box” campaign during December were not delivered until the following March. Now that’s demand!

As a prime candidate for Star Wars toys I was amazed and overjoyed to be drip fed a succession of action figures, play sets, books, comics and even duvet covers over the following years. My imagination could run riot with these extra props to help me.
I still have some of my original figures and my own kids play with them and seem to enjoy them as much as did.

Now in my old age I am slightly more cynical about the summer blockbuster season and the ensuing avalanche of toys that it brings. Sometimes I wonder if the toys are created and shoehorned into the films rather than the reverse. Anyone who has had the misfortune to sit through a Bratz, Pokemon or Power Rangers film in the cinema will understand where I am coming from. A slow cultural death by poor dubbing, hack writing and flimsy plot lines.

My son’s birthday is in mid June which makes him a prime target for the hard sell of the summer movie merchandising. I was heartened this year that two of the major films have decent characters to hang their toys upon. Both Iron Man and Indiana Jones have long histories and characters that should have a life beyond the end of August.

Both the films have gone for the marketing synergy of a tie in with Burger King. The Iron Man set included a cool figure, if a little small, and some funky sun glasses that my son loved. The Indiana Jones toys from Burger King include Boulder Esca
1000
pe Indy, Stunt Jump Indy, they are fun but again a little on the small side.

The main thrust of the Iron Man toys are action figures. The figures made by Hasbro are neat. The design from the packaging to the figures are great, the colours strong and likeness to the film characters are impressive. In line with other comic book hero’s the advantage is that the Iron Man toys can do battle with other Marvel and DC superhero’s. They have also released a set of dress up outfits with masks, suits and weapons. These look like great fun and should ensure hours of good imaginative play.

Lego appears to be the main trust of the Indiana Jones toys. They have released a variety of different sets covering most price ranges. The Motorcycle Chase with its mini motorcycle and check point looks immense fun. I’ve never been convinced that the larger play sets are worth the money or the time to construct. The never stay complete for that long in my house!

I love Lego and it has a shelve life that easily out strips the life span of most toys. Once the thrill of the film has died away the Lego can be reused in any number of ways, combined with other sets, morphed and redesigned. The small figures will join the never ending army of Lego figures that double as everything from crowds at soccer matches to holiday makers at the airport or flood victims in need of rescue.

With the new influx of toys the issue becomes what to do with those from last year! What should I do with those Transformers that are cluttering up the toy box.

I have been using Jumbleworld with my children to sell there old toys. Jumbleworld is one of the better online auction sites for children. It allows the parents to control the accounts so no massive over spending can occur! You can use jumbleworld for buying and selling used toys online.

If I had to choose two toys from this years summer blockbusters they would be Indiana Jones Lego and the Iron Man outfit.

Meet The Universal Hero – Samurai Jack

The Samurai Jack cartoons may quite easily be catalogued as “weird”. The dramatic accent is of a clear Asian origin, while the storyline and plot development are a blend of US and European cartoon styles. Samurai Jack was sent away, as a boy, to train in the disciplines of the samurai, when the evil Aku conquered his homeland. As an adult, Samurai Jack was sent away into a distant future by a time-travel portal. The Samurai Jack cartoons observe our hero as he journeys through strange universes, constantly fighting against Aku’s evil creations and searching for the portal that will take him home. Each new episode brings new characters on stage, but Samurai Jack is often crossing path with the Scotsman in his fight against Aku and Demongo.

The characters of Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack – he is the perfect incarnation of a hero. Brave, noble and just, Samurai Jack saves countless civilizations from the perils brought upon them by the shape shifting Aku. Samurai Jack is a man of few words, as he lets his advanced training, karate skills and sharp blade do all the talking, in this fast paced, action filled cartoon series.

Aku – with evil supernatural powers, Aku has brought chaos in every world he visited. No force was strong enough to counter Aku’s dark dealings – but then Samurai Jack came along. Aku knows that Jack is the only one who can stop him, so he unleashes his full strength to eliminate the silent warrior.

The Scotsman – a truly weird warrior, the Scotsman has a magical sword and a machine gun instead of his left leg. Although at first Samurai Jack and the Scotsman often crossed paths as opponents, they are now fighting on the same side of the barricade against Aku.

Demongo – summoned by Aku, Demongo is able to steal the power and essence of the universe’s greatest warriors. He uses this power to try and defeat Samurai Jack – our hero, however, knows how to use that same power in his advantage.

For one of the richest women in Japan, life hasn’t been one of sitting back and basking in her glory. It has been constant work, constant success, and constant joy. Rumiko Takahashi, who created the original manga of Inuyasha, grew to heights unheard of in popularity and demand from the start of her career. An incredible 100,000 of her works have been sold the world over, making her not only one of the richest women in Japan, but making her the best selling female comic artist in history.

She didn’t even start out obsessed with cartooning. She did love manga all her life and even founded a manga appreciation society in her high school. It was in her next-to-last year of high school that she decided to make manga art a career, and embarked on it with intensity until two years later she found some success. Her story, Katte Na Yatsura (Overbearing People), appeared in the magazine, Shonen Sunday. Almost all of Takahashi’s work was thereafter featured exclusively in this magazine.

In Shonen Sunday, along with her work, there are also featured comments from the author herself. She has a favorite baseball team which is the Hanshin Tigers, and her favorite music group is Shazna. Sometimes she talks of her childhood. It’s a great way to get to know her.

Studying comic drawing at a Japanese college and working as an assistant to another well-known cartoonist, Kazuo Umezu, she became the original artist that she is in heart, drawing her stories from an unlimited imagination.

Late in 1978, Rumiko worked on her first full-length series entitled Urusei Yatsura. It became one of the most loved manga and anime comedies in Japan. And in 1980, when she began to publish regularly, she began her second major series, Maison Ikkoku This series is now considered to be one of the all-time best manga romances.

As her stories appeared and attracted many fans, she grew in popularity as an artist while improving her own writing and artistic abilities. In 1987, a huge year for her career success, three of her most well known stories ended and she began work on Ranma ½.

This story is about a teenage martial artist named Ranma Saotome. He ends up getting changed into a girl each time he gets splashed with cold water. This series ran the longest of all her series and finally came to a conclusion in 1996.

One of her early short stories called Fire Tripper was a model for Inuyasha. Both have a high school girl as the main character, both contain time travel. There are also many similarities in the personalities and the clothes of the main characters.

All of Rumiko Takahashi’s work has become popular throughout the world, and with over 20 years of publishing her manga art, she earned the title of The Princess of Manga. She’s won many awards, including the New Comic Artist Award in 1978 and in 1994 the Inkspot Award in America.

There is no sign of her stopping her artistic endeavors and her fans await not so patiently for what will come next.

Anime – Part 1

Anime is the Japanese version of the Western world of animation and the style is applied to almost all forms of Japanese animation. In Japan, they tend to use the word Anime to refer to all kinds of animated media including western animations. Yet in the western world, Anime is used to refer to animated material originating from Japan.
By convention, Anime is usually hand drawn, occasionally adding in CGI elements where necessary or appropriate. Unlike the west, where studios such as Disney and DreamWorks have a large focus on computer animation, Anime has stuck with its roots and will mostly likely continue this tradition for many years to come.
One of the major factors that separate Japanese Animation from other animations is the prevalence and abundance of Anime itself. In Japan, there is Anime that caters for people across the social, economic and cultural boundaries. They range from wholesome family films such as titles from Studio Ghibli through to extreme acts of sexual and violent behaviour for those 18 or over. It’s this wide range of titles that has garnered Anime such an enormous fan base both in Japan and around the world.
Many Japanese Anime are direct descendents of popular Japanese Manga titles, something that again separates them from the rest of the world’s animated output. Manga is the traditional Japanese form of what many would describe as a comic book and is more popular and more visible in Japanese society than Anime and also represents an enormous amount of the book industry in the country. With over $4.4 Billion (US Dollars) in sales in the 2007 year alone, something the American and European comic industry can only look upon with envious eyes.
Like Anime, Manga is more prevalent and common within Japan. In fact it’s regular to see a bunch of people crowding around local convenience stores browsing the wide selection of Manga available. The wide selection then also caters for the wide range of tastes such as Pokemon and Doraemon to the more adult orientated content.

Are Dress Up Games A Good Choice For My Kid?

Do you think that the baby dolls with pink dresses and cute skull caps are the most desirable items that a little girl could want? No, that is so outdated or, to speak in fashion terms, “so 1995”. Nowadays, it seems that the most popular dolls are no longer made of plastic, they no longer have the baby doll outfits and their baby shoes. Nope. Nowadays, dolls are not even real anymore, they are virtual. Virtual dolls won’t be a surprise to you, in case you are familiar with the popular dress-up games that can be found on a wide range of websites. Wait: virtual dolls that can be dressed as the player pleases? Yes, exactly. Well, these dress-up games might not be such bad things – after all, it seems quite affordable to “own” and play with a virtual doll – oh wait, it is actually free.

So, what do we need in order to have fun with these games? Well, we obviously need a computer, the one and only Internet, a few clicks and lots of imagination! Think about it: these clothes need no washing, no ironing, no folding, no maintenance at all, we simply select them and place them on the doll’s figure. And no, we don’t need to get annoyed trying to slide those tiny buttons into their even tinier button holes. What a relief!

If you are a mom or a dad and your kid is playing with these virtual dolls and dress-up games, you might ask yourself: Are these games any good for my kid? Can he/she learn something from them? You will be surprised that yes, your kid might actually learn something. For sure, not advanced mathematics, spelling or history, but kids and teens can actually improve their aesthetic sense and their artistic abilities – after all, mixing forms, colors and shapes (as in clothes) together can be quite an artistic hobby. Such as painting. Such as drawing or such as coloring and the list can go on. Don’t be surprised if your little one comes tom you and informs you that he/she desires to be a stylist or a fashion designer, after a few rounds with these dress-up games.

And, above all, dress-up games stir the imagination and creativity. Sure, at a first glance, these games – that seem to simulate the games of 5 year old girls with their plastic dolls – might seem superficial: after all, it is all about clothes with spangles and glitter, high heeled boots, jeans miniskirts, red wigs and oversized earrings. You might tend to think that all these trendy elements do not actually construct role models for your kid. But think about it this way: would you rather see your kid play one of those shooting, killing and butchering games? Monsters, guns and blood versus pretty clothes and trendy accessories – you decide. The dress-up games must seem really harmless, if analyzed from this perspective. OK, we couldn’t go that far and call these games quite educational, but hey, they are a preferable and creative choice.

Cheap Platinum Wedding Rings

Completely contrary to popular belief, this is the engagement ring that the focal point for the fingers of a woman, to be sure that what they are looking for fine rings, they should vote against. It is a temptation to seek expensive platinum wedding rings, but it avoided if the engagement ring is to remain the center of attention. If two people say their vows to stay together, is clearly in the circular shape of the symbol ring fingers at each other. This tradition goes back to a great extent the true origin is lost in all probability, but the label is that the modern administration of the rings, the last act of presenting gifts completed after the ceremony.

Eternity rings are becoming more fashionable alternative to the stated purpose, but the concept is always the same. It is now engraved on more and more popular, so if not and your partner match buy examples because both engraved with a personal message to you two, just to give them a unique feel. Ultimately, choosing a wedding ring in platinum is that you are expressive style and personality. There is really no right or wrong here, offering both satisfied with your choices.

These jewels are very important in the sense more than anything else is there to support, which should never be subtracted from your finger. Always try to buy examples of the best quality you can and you will not regret it. The worst mistake to purchase wedding rings to couples at low prices, a decision that, unfortunately, usually within a few years. Assuming you have a healthy amount of money to spend on your wedding rings in platinum, it is important to ensure that fit properly.

After you can count your fingers for the rings to do when the style you choose, ensuring no problems later. This can occur in both directions with the possibility of marriage to work, no more than a slide or two inches! Take your time, the jewelry store if you want a good job, give him some time before the big day to do their job. The best way to do this is to buy platinum wedding, sometimes resembles the wedding date is set, as it can for several months or more must complete this task.

Nobody will complain that the number of styles available these days, but can reduce the time required to raise the voice. While it is always beautiful, elegant, the choice of platinum wedding rings you should consider whether it is comfortable and the test of time on looks. You can buy the rings and if you want a good choice is always the same in future years.

Whether you need a gift for Christmas, a birthday or other occasion, anime fans can be hard to buy for, especially if you know little about the world known as “anime”. First, let me explain a little about it. Anime is a type of animation that started in Japan. Basically, you can call it a Japanese version of cartoons. However, it has some big differences. Where American animation tends to be geared primarily towards children, there are actually many types of anime, geared for many ages and interests. For instance, there are series targeted squarely at young boys, young girls, young women and so on. There are also adult series, with more adult themes and content. There are also many different thematic styles of anime, including those centered around robots (called mecha), romantic series, fighting series, school life series and so on.

In order for you to choose a fantastic gift for the Japanese animation fan in your life, you first need an idea of what anime series or at least what kind of theme they enjoy. Find out by perusing their DVD collection or checking what they watch on TV. Once you know the series they like, here are some suggestions for surefire gifts for any anime fan:

Manga

Manga is simply the Japanese version of comic books or graphic novels. Many anime series are based on a manga series. Any anime fan would love the original manga their favorite series is based on. For original Japanese manga, you can usually find some on eBay and at Japanese importers like JustManga and Manga.com. For the most popular series, like Inuyasha, you can find English translated manga books at many major bookstores.

Live Action and Japanese Drama DVD’s

Some anime and manga series have a live action version, like Sailor Moon, that a Sailor Moon fan would likely be interested in. If they seem interested in Japanese culture, then consider getting them some Japanese TV drama series. There are many Japanese drama series aimed at tweens and teens that usually take place in school or high school. Check out Nodame Cantabile, Hana Yori Dango and Gokusen, each was based on anime or manga series or both. Look for these series at places like YesAsia and on eBay. Make sure to get the English subtitled versions.

Toys

Some anime series, like Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion and others, have many toys available. If you really want to get a special gift, try to get some of the toys that are imported from Japan. Toys available include action figures, vehicles, stuffed toys, models and dolls. You can find toys for the most popular series at major toy stores, but for not so popular series, try eBay, YesAsia and other import websites.

Video Games

Many of the most popular anime series like Naruto, Inuyasha and Bleach also have video games based on them. This is a great gift idea since what fan wouldn’t want to play a game as their favorite character? Make sure to find out what game system they have so you can get a game for their particular console or handheld.

Music

Many anime fans become interested in Japanese culture through anime, especially since popular Japanese artists and bands are used on the soundtracks to the majority of series. You can get them the soundtrack to the series or even a few JPOP or JROCK CD’s. JPOP and JROCK is the abbreviation of Japanese pop and Japanese rock music. Find many artists at both YesAsia and eBay. Popular Japanese music artists include Ayumi Hamasaki (pop), Utada Hikaru (pop/R&B), Arashi (pop boy band), L’Arc-en-Ciel (rock band), Morning Musume (pop girl band) and many more.

Collectibles & Decorative Items

There are also many collectibles and decorative items available for some series. Consider animation cells, limited edition toys, photo albums, calendars, posters and more. Find these at YesAsia and eBay.

Clothing & Apparel

Some anime fans enjoy dressing up as their favorite character, this is called “cosplay”. Try to find out who their favorite character is and get them a costume or accessories. For instance, an Inuyasha fan would love a necklace like the one Inuyasha wears or a play sword like he uses. Or go all out and get them a full costume just like their favorite character. One place to check out is CosplayMagic.com.

Language Books or Software

If your anime fan has a serious interest in Japanese culture, then consider getting them a book or audio learning set to help them learn, read and write Japanese. This is an excellent gift option if you’re having a hard time finding gifts from their favorite anime series. This is also a gift you can feel good about, since learning a new language is a very valuable skill for their future.

Food

From sushi to Pocky, if they have an interest in Japanese culture, they might like to try some of the food they have seen consumed in animes and dramas. Some suggestions include a sushi making kit, Japanese candy and gum, Pocky (a pretzel covered with chocolate), strange flavored Japanese versions of candy bars like KitKat and more. You can find many types of Japanese candy at AsianFoodGrocer and other Japanese food import sites.

Okay guys, what are your favorite Fullmetal Alchemist quotes? (having a bet with my friend, to see if people will say more serious ones or funny ones) Mine is:

“YOUR STOMACH'S A MELON!”

Affordable Website Design 2 – What You Get

The true measure of a website’s affordability is its value, not its cost. You can get an affordable website design for a thousand dollars, and if it includes powerful programming, custom graphic design, even some e-commerce and SEO, it is quite a value indeed. On the other hand, its title immediately changes to expensive if you only receive a few web pages, a stylesheet, and a site map. So how do you know how affordable a website really is? How do you decide what you should get to ensure that you are getting what you paid for?

Ever notice how a lot of web designers sell their services in packages? Take a look at the packages they offer. Are they looking suspiciously similar? Are you noticing that the main difference in the package is number of pages or improved hosting services (such as email accounts, bandwidth, and storage)? I’ve used packages like this as examples in a few of my articles; I like to call them “value meal” web design, not out of any actual value, but because they remind me a lot of a fast food restaurant where you buy for the burger but pay by the french fry.

Now of course, you aren’t going to want to limit yourself to only a few pages or a few hundred megs of monthly bandwidth. You have ambitions! And that’s how you wind up losing money. It looks impressive, and it’s meant to, because you see how it already costs a hundred dollars or so just for a basic ten page site or a hosting plan with 10 MB storage and 100 MB bandwidth and 10 email accounts, so when you see that the $1,000 plan has a thousand pages, a gig of storage, 10 gigs of bandwidth, and unlimited email accounts, well, that’s a pretty good value. Ten times the price for a hundred times the stuff.

It’s a clever tactic, and it’s no doubt a tactic intended to catch people who don’t have experience with web design and web hosting and don’t realize the actual value of the services being offered. First off, what are the chances that you’re actually going to use a thousand web pages? Just so you know, that probably doesn’t mean they write a thousand quality pages for your website. It means you can give them a thousand pages of text and they’ll format it and link it up and lay it out. Not individually, of course. They’re web designers; they have stylesheets and php inclusions and databases to do all that for them. But chances are, by the time you actually have a thousand pages worth of information, you’re looking for a database-driven site, which dynamically creates individual pages, so the actual page count is irrelevant.

But what about that storage and bandwidth? A gig of storage and ten gigs of bandwidth may very well be required; you can manage with less, but if you plan for your site to grow, that’s a pretty solid amount. The thing is, in the grand scheme of things, that’s dinky. Bigger web hosts often offer hosting packages for under ten dollars per month that offer – ready for this? – thousands of gigs of storage and ban
1000
dwidth. Not to mention unlimited emails, a few add-on domains, and a variety of extras. These small web design companies are offering you something called reseller hosting, where they buy a package from a big host and sell the hosting to their clients. The packages they provide are smaller than those the main hosting company, but will probably cost more, because they need to make a profit. It’s a typical middle-man addition that saves you nothing, unless you really want to only pay one company.

So what should you be looking for in an affordable website design? You should be looking for a flexible pricing system that allows you to put what you want into your site, be it graphics or programming or e-commerce. You should look for a designer who has the experience to figure out how to build your site the way you want it and the creativity to show some style while doing so. You should look for companies that don’t charge by the page, and you should look for a full-service, dedicated web host to house your final site (if your designer can recommend a good one, all the better!) In short, you shouldn’t purchase a website that charges based on a systemic package that you probably won’t use to its fullest. You should buy the site with a price based on what you’ll use and what you get.
